As both a musician and a music lover, I’m always listening to music, even when I’m on the go. While I love being able to listen to songs on my phone, sometimes there’s situations where I want to share music with others and normally the only way to do that is if I have somewhere to hook my phone up (like in the car or if someone has a portable speaker system for iPhones). Since it would be a pain for me to carry a big speaker system around with me, generally I just have to hope someone else has an iPhone speaker hookup at their place if I want to play my songs.
Then one day I was at a party and one of my buddies had these headphones called Flips Audio that you could flip outwards and they turned into a portable speaker system. They were really cool and the sound quality was surprisingly really good as well. It was the perfect solution because I carry headphones around with me anyways, but now I could also have my own portable speakers too. I ordered a set online and have been very happy with my purchase.
How Flips Audio Works
Flips are called “Solo 2 Social” headphones. They have 2 functions: For one, you can use them as you would normal headphones while you drive, walk, work or exercise. But if you’re at a party or social gathering and you want to be able to play your music for others, or maybe you just want to listen without having to wear headphones, you just need to flip the earpieces outwards and they instantly turn into a speaker system. The sound quality is very crisp and clear too which I must admit, I was surprised about.
When you want to go back to listening just for yourself, flip your earphones back into the original position and put them back on your head and you’re set.
The battery is a lithium-ion battery that lasts for a long time and is easily recharged with a USB cord (it does drain quicker in speaker mode though).
One of my favorite things about these headphones though is how comfortable they are. The earpieces are made out of memory foam so they are extremely comfortable on your ears.
Pros and Cons
I don’t think that there has ever been a perfect product offered on the market, so of course Flips Audio has both pros and cons. Still, I think my Flips are awesome!
Pros:
- Portable speakers and headphones, all in one. This saves me from having to buy a separate speaker system.
- Memory foam earpieces keep you comfortable while listening.
- Use Flips in multiple contexts: Cars, at parties, bars, while exercising. . .just flip your headphones whenever you need to and you are set.
- Compatible with any 3.5 millimeter audio jack (standard size on most phones, iPods, etc.)
- Flips Audio’s Lithium ion battery is long lasting and USB rechargeable.
- Flips come with a protective carrying case.
Cons:
- Flips Audio only comes in two color schemes at the moment (black & white). However both of them are really cool looking so I don’t really mind.
- When in Social mode, the battery lasts about 3 hours before it needs recharging.
Where to Buy
Don’t buy your Flips anywhere but online, from the official website. You’ll get a 30 day money back guarantee, a 90 day warranty against manufacturer’s defects, and, if you order more than one Flips Audio, you’ll get free shipping! Plus, the site has a video showing Flips Audio in action, a demo, and also a detailed FAQ that you can check out.
Final Recommendation
Sure, you can buy a separate set of speakers for your devices, but really, what’s the point? Flips give you headphones and speakers, all in one device. Plus, since you wear them, you won’t have to bother with trying to tote speakers along with you when you want to share your music with others. I’ve been very happy with my purchase and I know you will be as well. So give them a shot, even if you don’t like them, there’s a money back guarantee.
